Visakhapatnam: The Railway Board has sanctioned Rs 10 crore to the Waltair division of East Coast Railway (ECoR) to remodel and renovate the railway station at Visakhapatnam.
The railway ministry selected 70 railway stations in the country, including the one in Vizag, for renovation, and instructed the divisional railway officers (DRMs) concerned to send a detailed project report with architectural models.
The Waltair division sent the report in May this year along with other stations listed by the railway ministry.
The board selected 30 stations, including Vizag, to sanction the funds for redoing the stations’ interiors and exteriors.
Waltair divisional railway manager MS Mathur said, “We have got approval for the renovation of the station for Rs 10 crore. We will be inviting tenders in the next few weeks and hopefully complete the project by March 2019.”
The renovation project would include the remodeling of all basic amenities and facilities for passengers from seating and parking, to the installation of modern art and design. “The station would wear a new look from the next financial year. Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam stations in Andhra Pradesh got the approval for renovation in the first phase,” Mathur added.
He said that the Rs 10 crore project is different from the earlier proposal of redeveloping the station at an estimated cost of Rs 200 crore. As the earlier proposal is still pending, the railway board took the decision of remodeling the stations with its own funds without any private sector investment.
“The renovation project will not touch any issues related to the operational needs of the railways. This project is only meant for the beautification of the station,” Mathur explained while adding that railways would also take suggestions from local citizens in the renovation of the station.
The city railway station was declared the cleanest railway station in the country in last year’s Swachh rankings in the A1 and A category.
