In Visakhapatnam, Vigilance and enforcement officials raided several shops and godowns and seized adulterated tea powder from godowns in Anakapalli and Dabagardens on July 31 in five locations. Over the past 2 years, this type of raids are conducted across the state and they seized adulterated tea powder in large stocks from various places in the states.
The team which is raided four places in Dabagardens, Dwarakanagar and other areas in the city is led by vigilance and enforcement SP P Koteswara Rao and they collected samples of adultered tea powder and sent them for tests to food laboratory in Hyderabad.
SP P Koteswara Rao noted that their teams had conducted raids and collected samples. Tea powder was found packaged under the known brand names in a majority of the cases. They had sent the samples for the test, once the results reach them they will take action according to it.
People usually impressed by the color and the taste of the tea which is achieved by mixing color, which can be harmful to people’s health. As the number of consumers are increasing traders have started to resort to illegal means to make a profit. which can be harmful to people’s health said by one of the GVMC food inspectors.
In some cases Mixing powdered tamarind seeds for the color and powdered cashew kernel for flavor had taken placed which are harmful to the health. Nowadays the mixing of coloring agents is more but The usage of tamarind or cashew kernel powder is an old process. In recent years we no longer find tamarind or cashew kernel powders in the tea said by the district food inspector Srinivasa Rao.
He further continued that they have been seized adulterated tea powder 7 months ago in the city. The results of the samples collected by them had been positive and indicated the usage of colors.
One of the vigilance officers said that on the tea packets you will not find any names or brands or address of the company and they will only target the small centers for sales but not big centers.
To North Andhra region especially to Vizag, the tea powder is generally imported from Kolkata and Kerala.
