GITAM University Director MVVS Murthy passes away in a road accident


Founder of GITAM,  MVVS Murthy passes away in a road accident in the USA, on Tuesday evening. At the time of accident social entrepreneur, Kadiyala Venkata Ratnam was also in the van he is in a critical condition.

Dr. Mathukumilli Veera Venkata Satyanarayana Murthy, popularly known as M.V.V.S.Murthy was born in an affluent agricultural family in picturesque Konaseema area of Moolapolam Village, Ainavilli Mandal, East Godavari District Andhra Pradesh on 3rd July, 1938. After formal schooling at his native place, he moved on to Kakinada for higher studies and graduated in Economics from P.R.Govt.College. He obtained Masters Degree in Politics & Public Administration, B.L., and also Ph.D., in Economics from Andhra University.

Dr.M.V.V.S.Murthy is a multifaceted personality imbibing the qualities of an industrialist, educationist, politician and philanthropist with social responsibility. After a brief stint as Advocate in the High court of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad, he moved on to business and established Visakha Bottling Company (VBC) in 1967 with a modest investment. Because of his hard work and meticulous planning, the VBC was a phenomenal success in the manufacturing of soft drinks and earned the name of Gold Spot Murthy. He continued to contribute his might for rapid industrialization of Andhra Pradesh. In recognition to his services, Andhra Pradesh chapter of Commerce & Industry has elected him as its President in 1980.

His deep concern for women’s education and empowerment has made him start Women’s’ Govt. Junior College at Amalapuram. His love for education and social upliftment has sown the seeds for the establishment of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Junior College at Vadlapudi, Rehabilitation Colony, Visakhapatnam, and Sri Seetarama Degree College in Poosapatirega, Vizianagaram District and MPM Trust Junior College for weaker sections at Moolapolam Village, Ainavilli Mandal, East Godavari District, his birthplace, all of which are serving the economically weaker and socially backward sections of the society for collegiate education.

Dr. Murthy is a strong advocate for high ethical and moral values and excellence in technical education for economic growth of the Nation. To realize his dream of providing quality in Technical and Higher education, he ventured to start Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (GITAM) in the year 1980. Recognizing its phenomenal growth and quality in higher education, Ministry of Human Resources & Development, Govt. of India has granted Deemed University status in the year 2007 under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. GITAM University with its main campus at Visakhapatnam and off campuses at Hyderabad & Bengaluru is a leader in imparting higher education in diverse fields. His desire to provide quality and affordable Medicare to large sections of the society resulted in shaping up of GITAM Hospital with ultra modern facilities. His relentless efforts to give ethical and value-based medical education has finally taken a shape in the year 2015 with recognition of GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences & Research by the Medial Council of India.

On the political front, He is an important founder member of the regional party, Telugudesam Party founded by Late Sri N.T. Rama Rao. He occupied many coveted posts in the party and proved his leadership qualities many a times. Dr. Murthy was appointed as Chairman, VUDA (Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority). During his tenure between 1987 and 1989, the Green Visakha concept took shape and VUDA was in forefront in plantations in the entire country. VUDA Park was expanded and Kailash Hill Park was initiated during his tenure. Today the Kailasha hill is a tourist attraction and has become an iconic landmark of Visakhapatnam. The idea of satellite townships was conceived and successfully implemented at Sagarnagar, Madhurawada, Simhapuri to decongest the overcrowded city. Recognizing his contribution to the society and the party, he was elected twice in 1991 and in 1999 as a member of 10th and13th Lok Sabha from Visakhapatnam and had represented Standing Committee on Finance, Consultative Committee of Civil Aviation and Public Accounts Committee., etc. He received best Parliamentarian award during his tenure and was felicitated by the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.
