The fire prevention wing of GVMC (Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation) has issued notices to over 30 restaurants and hotels in the city for disrespectful fire safety norms.
On February 12 this comes in the wake of a major fire accident in Delhi that led to the death of 17 people.
DFO, fire prevention wing, J Mohan Rao noted, some of the small hotels do not have sufficient fire safety equipment. “While most star hotels in the city have sufficient fire safety equipment, as well a few hotels were equipped with fire fighting apparatus but they were not functional. Such notices will be issued on the basis of inspections in coming days, Rao added.
As per sources some restaurants and hotels do not have fire alarms, proper exits in case of fire mishap, an adequate number of fire extinguishers, basement sprinklers and other facilities. As well, in some establishments, while fire equipment has been installed, they are either not maintained suitably and hence do not function or the staff is not trained in using them.
fire prevention wing highers expressed that as per norms they do not have any rights to take against a party in case it violates fire safety norms. They can only advice highers concerned to take action against them, they added.
