Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) investigators conducted raids on the properties and houses belonging to Narsipatnam Municipal Commissioner H. Shankara Rao in three north coastal districts on Wednesday, on a charge of collecting wealth disproportionate to his known source of income.
Searches at 14 places
Searches were conducted at 14 places including the MVP Colony residence of the official and other properties at Bobbili, Vizianagaram and Palasa of Srikakulam district. The officials unearthed properties worth Rs1.06 crore (document value), while their market value is estimated to be more than Rs.10 crore.
According to ACB DSP (Visakhapatnam Urban) K. Ramakrishna Prasad, the higher has built a 1,600 sft house (G+1) in Sector IV of MVP Colony. Documents relating to a 266.6-sq yards house site at Kummaripalem of Bheemili and a 207 sq yards site in Sector-IV of MVP Colony, both registered in the name of his wife were both registered in the name of his wife revealed. Documents related to a vacant land measuring 0.22 cents were also found. He also constructed a floor in the house of his father in VUDA Colony, Madhurwada.
Apart from these, gold ornaments weighing 100 grams worth Rs 1.50 lakh, silver articles weighing 250 gram worth Rs10,000, household articles worth Rs 4 lakh, bank balances of Rs 5.20 lakh, a two-wheeler, a four-wheeler were also found during the searches.
According to ACB officials, the EMIs the official pays every month is said to be more than his salary. It is also learnt that he had a number of agents through whom he had secured these assets.
Shankara Rao joined the Municipal Administration & Urban Development Department in May 1991 as a health assistant in Visakhapatnam district. He was promoted as sanitary inspector in 1996 and worked at Bheemili, Srikakuiarn and Vizianagaram districts.
In 2014, he was promoted as Commissioner and worked in Bheemili and Bobbili Municipalities and Visakhapatnam district. Since February 15, he has been working as Commissioner (Grade-III) of Narsipatnam Municipality.
A Disproportionate Assets (DA) case has been registered against him. The investigation is on, the DSP said.
