In Vizag city there are 40 Anna Canteens going to be set up by The GVMC (Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation). This subsidized canteen will be pressure for daily wage workers, lower middle class and for small-time employees. Particularly it will be helpful for the floating population in the city who messed up with paying between Rs.50 and Rs.100 per meal even at small restaurants.

Before setting up Anna Canteens in Andhra Pradesh, an official team from Andhra Pradesh with GVMC commissioner M. Hari Narayanan had visited Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka, Haryana and Tamil Nadu earlier about the caution of the instructions which are need to be follow and the operation of the subsidized canteens in respective areas.

As per the observation the team noted about the prices of food an average is Rs.5 for breakfast and Rs.10 for lunch and dinner. And the team reported as the total cost is Rs.57 for providing a meal for three times a day. But the people need to pays Rs.25 only and the rest will be filled by the state
government.

203 Anna Canteens in Andhra Pradesh proposals submitted by the Municipal Administration Director had recently. In regarding to the proposals, there is Rs.79 lakh will be spare for the construction of the kitchen and Rs.38 lakh will be provided to construct a canteen.

The GVMC had earlier carried out a survey in the city to identify suitable locations for these canteens, said by an official senior of GVMC.

The official said that “However, the number of canteens has now increased to 40 from the initially expected 15-25 canteens. Each zone in the city will get a minimum of three to four canteens. Priority will be given to those areas with floating population such as the RTC Complex, railway station, industrial areas, Jagadamba Junction and others.”

Anna Canteen Launching in the Velagapudi about a year and half ago on a pilot basis, the proposal of extending it to all parts of the state has been going at a snail’s pace even after the state Cabinet’s approval back in 2014 itself. As per the estimation, 500-800 people are taking meals every day at Anna Canteen in Velagapudi.

The Annapurna Canteens in Hyderabad as well as the “Amma Canteens” in Tamil Nadu had become an instant success. According to the observers, the populist scheme worked in getting vote share for the respective governments in the recent elections.

The tenders will be issued by the civic corporation soon by inviting vendors for procurement of canteen equipment and catering services.
