GVMC Building Smart Disaster Management System Through Smart Poles


The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is about to install smart poles across the city as a part for making smart city vizag. These smart poles would be integrated with command and control center (CCC) and one of the pole has been installed already at near Diamond Park junction as a part of Visakhapatnam smart city which was initiative about Rs 150 core.

Each smart pole will consist of Wi-Fi and hotspot, fixed CCTV camera, one or two pan-tilt- zoom cameras (PTZ cameras) which is capable of high definition picture capturing with remote directional and zoom control video surveillance, public announcement speakers, environmental sensors, emergency call system, lamps etc.

The setup will also ensure with an advanced technologies of disaster alerts coordination management system. The CCC will respond in a coordinated manner and will be involved in all related government agencies, during any calamity or emergency.

The environmental sensors can collect and transmit the data of air quality levels, temperature, noise, humidity and other data to the CCC. And The Wi-Fi hotspots will give access internet for free to surrounding residents. These smart poles are designed in such matter to withstand wind speeds up to 225 kilometers an hour so that they can effort to handle during disasters. These services will be provided through a single smart pole and it makes the city to go forward.

M Hari Narayanan, GVMC commissioner said that majority of the residents of the city during the GVMC survey asked for a smart disaster management system so that, they have gearing up the command and communication center project.

The CCC, which primarily serves as an e-governance center, would also double up as a disaster management center,said Hari Narayanan.
