Visakhapatnam : National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) has urged Andhra Pradesh to take up steps to boost egg production and consumption.
Addressing a media conference here on Friday as part of the ongoing campaign of the NECC to promote egg consuption, its executive member and AP regional director Bharanikana Rama Rao said the media here on Friday that eggs were much cheaper compared to other foods, and had many nutrients which was reason to be promoted not only for food security but nutrition security.
Andhra Pradesh, which used to be the number one producer of eggs in the country per day, had dropped to the second position after bifurcation. At present, Tamil Nadu is on the top with production of five crore eggs per day followed by Andhra Pradesh at 4.5 crore and Telangana at 3.5 crore.
There is lot of potential in the State to further boost the production and regain the top spot, he said.
“While the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has recommended consumption of 180 eggs per capita, it is actually only 65 or so in the country. It needs to be boosted a great deal,” he pointed out and suggested the AP Government that one way of increasing consumption is to supply more boiled eggs in the mid-day meal programme in the schools of the State.
At present, three boiled eggs are being supplied a week to each student which needs to be at least doubled, he opined.
Mr. Rama Rao said the late B V Rao was a Telugu man who heralded the poultry revolution in the country and both Telugu states should strive to give a boost to the sector in his memory, as the sector generates a lot of employment.
